22 years ago today Orlando welcomed a theme park that would let guests experience something they never had before at a theme park – the opportunity to “ride the movies.” Through thrilling roller coasters, rides, shows and attractions, Universal Orlando gave guests the chance to be a part of their favorite Universal Studios films. Because of that ability, Universal Orlando has become one of the most visited theme parks in the world. In honor of the milestone anniversary it is only appropriate to take a look at Universal’s most iconic rides throughout the years.

Back to the Future/ Simpsons Ride: On May 2, 1991, just a year after the theme park opened guests to Universal Orlando got the opportunity to go back to the future with Doc Brown and Marty McFly from the hit movie Back to the Future in the simulator ride of the same name. The ride took guests on a similar adventure through time as the actual movie did. But after nearly 16 years of taking guests back to the future, the ride was becoming outdated and eventually closed. It was replaced a year later with another simulator ride but this time that ride was based on a popular TV series, The Simpsons. Adapting to the wants of guests and staying up-to-date with the rapidly improving technology available, the Simpsons Ride drove Universal into the future with the use of computer generated 3D animation and state-of-the-art technology.

Hanna Barbera/Jimmie Neutron/Despicable Me: One of the park’s original rides, The Futuristic World of Hanna-Barbera was also a simulator ride that took audience members on a hot pursuit of kidnappers Dick Dastardly and Muttley. While entertaining and one of Universal’s classic rides, Hanna Barbera also became an outdated ride and closed in 2002. In 2003, Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast settled into the former Barbera residence and gave kids a “blast” as they traveled through their favorite Nicktoon worlds. But to make room for one of Universal’s newest box office hits, Jimmy Neutron closed in August 2011 to make room for Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, a 3D ride that takes guests on a thrilling adventure with Gru, his adopted daughters and a slew of minions as a part of Gru’s latest mission. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is set to open sometime this year.

Jaws/ Wizarding World of Harry Potter Expansion: Last December, Universal said goodbye to one of its most iconic rides. After 22 years of torturing tour boats in the Amity Harbor, Jaws took his last bite out of the park for good.  It was more than a sad day but rumors of a Wizarding World expansion expected to take its place make us all very excited for the future of Universal Orlando.
