The Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa has been mummified. And if you don’t get to the museum before September 9th, you won’t have a chance to see the largest collection of real mummies and artifacts ever assembled in the exciting exhibit Mummies of the World (separately sold exhibit.)
Brought to you by 20 world-renowned museums and organizations across seven countries including Asia, Oceania, South America Europe and ancient Egypt, this never-before-seen collection takes visitors on a trip as far back as 6,500 years ago to the world of mummies and mummifications. Using modern science, interactive and multi-media exhibits with 3D animation, guests for the first time ever will get a comprehensive look into the world of a mummy including how they were created, where they came from and who they were before they were embalmed. The entire Mummies of the World exhibit allows us to not only get an insiders look at mummies but to learn more about past cultures and civilizations.
Guests to the exhibit are first introduced to the mummies with an optional three-minute introductory video. You’ll then enter a small gallery containing a mummified Egyptian child before walking through a larger gallery, where a collection of mummified animals rest.
In all, there are 40 mummies, along with related artifacts in this incredible collection. And you’ll be surprised to discover just how many of these mummies were found in places other than Egypt. The mummies include an 18th-century family who died from the plaque and were discovered buried in a Hungarian church crypt; a Peruvian child mummy dated back 6,240 years and even an Egyptian cat mummy wrapped in painted linen bandaging.
And if you’re wondering what mummification does to the skin or fur there is even an interactive station that allows guests to experience what embalmed skin and mummified animal fur feel like. But rest assured, there is nothing grotesque or morbid about these mummies. The exhibit is about science and the use of dim lighting and soft music help shy guests feel more comfortable about what they are looking at.
The Mummies of the World exhibit is a self-guided tour, so you can take as little or as long as you like exploring and discovering the unique world of mummies and mummifications. If you want to learn more about the exhibit there is an audio tour available for an additional charge.
To experience this impressive collection of mummies and artifacts and to learn more about where these mummies came from and the cultures they left behind, make sure to visit the Mummies of the World exhibit at MOSI before September 9th.
