Tree of Life Grows New Roots at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has put down new roots. After being shrouded by construction walls for weeks, the iconic tree has emerged to reveal a new lineup of animal sculptures carved into its roots.

The 145-foot-structure originally debuted at the grand-opening of the park in 1998. It featured 103,000 leaves and started with over 325 animal carvings on it. Today, new life inhabits the tree including tiny bugs, massive crocodiles and more.

In addition to the carvings on the tree, Disney’s Animal Kingdom guests can also marvel at some of the park’s bigger animal sculptures including a massive heap of elephants, tigers and bears, deer, alligators, birds, lizards and more, some of which guests have decided make excellent benches. The detail in these animals is so incredible you may find yourself staring at them for hours. We recommend bringing your camera to capture the incredible craftsmanship, and while you snap don’t forget to get in the picture too! The updates make for the perfect backdrop.

Those visiting the Tree of Life will also be treated to an expanded walkway, which provides even better views of the Tree of Life as you walk through Discovery Island.  The new walkway will certainly be necessary as crowds flock to the theme park in the coming years.

The new roots on the Tree of Life are just a small part in Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s enhancements. The area is also prepping for the new Avatar Land coming in 2017 as well as the new nighttime show, “Rivers of Light” centered around and above Discovery River featuring live music, floating lanterns, water screens and animal imagery. The show will also include new nighttime entertainment including live performers on Discovery Island and a new night version of Kilimanjaro Safaris. No word yet on when the show will debut at the park.
