Walt’s Last Attraction
Pirates of the Caribbean first opened in Disneyland in March of 1967. Before Walt Disney’s death in December 1966, he was working with Imagineers on the creation of the attraction. Although the attraction didn’t open until after he was gone, Pirates of the Caribbean will always be known as one of Walt’s final attractions.
Not An Original
Even though Pirates of the Caribbean was extremely popular at Disneyland, a second version for Walt Disney World wasn’t in the initial plans. Imagineers assumed that the Caribbean-themed attraction wouldn’t be as appealing for guests in Florida since the destination was so close in proximity. They were wrong! When Walt Disney World did open, guests immediately began asking where Pirates of the Caribbean was and made requests for the attraction. By December 1973, Walt Disney World had a Pirates of the Caribbean attraction of its own!
Disney is known for its details both big and small, and even the queues for attractions are no exception. While waiting in line to ride Pirates of the Caribbean be sure to peek into the dungeon area. You’ll notice two pirate skeletons stuck in an endless stalemate of chess! The chess-playing skeleton gag was specifically created for the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction by Imagineer Marc Davis.
Attraction Inspired Film
Attractions, restaurants, and shows at the Disney Parks have been inspired by Disney films, but it’s pretty rare when a Disney attraction inspires a Disney movie! Pirates of the Caribbean has inspired an entire film series of the same name starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley. They films became so popular that Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics were added to the ride’s story throughout the attraction.
Fleet of Five
This attraction built originally for Disneyland in Anaheim, CA has since spread to four additional Disney Parks around the globe! After making the mistake of not including the Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom’s opening day lineup, the attraction became an opening day attraction for Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and eventually Shanghai Disneyland.
