Donuts hold a funny position in modern society. For some, they are a simple morning necessity built to curb an exhausting commute. For others, they are a rare indulgence. But for a growing number of the population, they are an obsession, a complex, Instagram-able fire that consumes all cognitive functions that aren’t vital for seeking out a “HOT DONUT” sign. When discussing donuts in Orlando, it’s simply a matter of how much you care about those circular morsels of gluten. The more you’re willing to explore, the more decadent the rewards can be. We’ve put together a list of some of the best donut spots in The City Beautiful, ranging from exciting theme park kiosks to unexpected locations near the city limits.
Donut King (3716 Howell Branch Rd.)
Donut King is a hometown hero. Ask any local, and they’ll be sure to sing the praises of this quirky and tireless donut shop. Donut King offers sweet treats in just about every size and shape Kandinsky could have ever fathomed. What endears Donut King to its customers, however, isn’t its quality as much as it is its absurdity and availability. M&M, Reese’s Pieces, Reese’s Cup, Butterfinger, Fruity Pebbles and even Sour Patch Kids all find their way onto the donuts, nestled into a glazed crown. Whether you’re a local or you’re just visiting Orlando, Donut King ensures you can’t miss out, with two locations in greater Orlando that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you’re just visiting the theme parks, don’t fret! The majority of donuts found on Walt Disney World property are, in fact, Donut King donuts. And if you’re staying at Universal Studios, just visit Lard Lad Donuts! Yes, the giant, pink-frosted donut of The Simpsons fame is also a Donut King creation.
Orlando Meats (728 Virginia Dr.)
This is a shocking entry, but it’s true. A local butcher shop makes one of the best donuts in the city. That sounds absurd, but try them and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. These donuts bridge the gap between the traditional fluffy donut and the firmer cake donut, also known as a cruller. There’s a lot of chew in these little rings and it’s a welcome surprise. The flavors change pretty frequently, but they’ll rarely leave you scratching your head. Churro, strawberry and sour cream are creative flavors, but not outlandish, and are executed to perfection. If you have any qualms about diving into a mountain of meat to grab a few donuts, fret not. Orlando Meats has a modern atmosphere with an open floor plan and a full menu of foods and beverages to sample.
Little Blue Donut Co. (223 W Fairbanks Ave.)
Accept no substitutes. This tiny establishment in Winter Park buries every other donut in the city then sprinkles the rubble with cinnamon sugar – seriously. Every donut here is made to order. Flavors range from innocent glazed donuts to chocolate frosted donuts to rings of fried dough bathed in honey, frosted with maple syrup and finally splattered with buttered popcorn. The blue-sky approach to donut flavors can sweep you off your feet and you’ll forget, if only for a moment, that you still have to consume these beauties. One bite, however, will send you through the ceiling. The exterior is quite crisp, but gives way to a fluffy, doughy center that will make any skeptic an instant fanatic. Even the author of this article, a self-proclaimed donut hater, was deeply moved by these sweet snacks.
