There are only a few days left to ride a dragon at Universal Orlando. Dragon Challenge at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure will stop flying guests September 4, 2017. The closure will make way for a new Harry Potter-themed coaster experience.
Originally named Dueling Dragons, the two-tracked inverted racing coaster was one of two attractions to remain after the transformation of The Lost Continent into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The coaster’s original design had two trains on separate tracks racing past each other. In 2011, there were accidents and related injuries and Islands of Adventure started running the trains at different times.
While the concept of riding a dragon fit well into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the roller coaster tracks that loomed over the village of Hogsmeade didn’t quite fit the theming of the land, which otherwise looks exactly like it does in the films.
Universal has confirmed a new “highly-themed coaster experience” will replace Dragon Challenge. There placement will happen in 2019 and will be unlike anything we’ve experienced from Universal Orlando.
Rumors point to the new ride being based on the Forbidden Forest where guests will encounter many of the animals featured in the series based on the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Universal has not confirmed any rumors but said, “This ride is going to redefine the category and transport you to thrilling places, drawing you into even more exciting adventures within the wizarding world.” Stay tuned for more details.
