Last year, Walt Disney World opened Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which takes guests inside the alien landscape of James Cameron’s Avatar. Now, the Orlando theme park is taking guests one step further inside the film with a new feature - the Pandora Utility Suit.

The suit, which is inspired by the iconic Amplified Mobility Platform (AMP) suits of power armor from the film, debuted at the park yesterday and features performers of The World of Avatar. Standing ten feet high, an actor pilots the cockpit of the suit and controls its movements. The giant walking suit was designed with articulated hands and a shoulder span of more than five feet. It also has claw marks and battle scars from a Thanatos - an alpha predator on Pandora.

Despite its scratches and marks, The Pandora Utility Suit at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was actually designed for restoration. Its function allows explorers to withstand the more dangerous parts of Pandora’s terrain while collecting plant samples and studying wildlife.

The cast members wearing the suits travel throughout the land interacting with guests, sharing details about the land’s otherworldly landscape and highlight the importance of preserving nature.

The Utility Suit was a collaboration of Cameron’s Lightstrom Entertainment, Disney Parks Live Entertainment, Michael Curry Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering. The suit debuted yesterday as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Earth Day.
