There's only one week left before the official opening of the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction at Universal Studios Orlando, but don't worry if you are planning a trip to Orlando before July 2 nd because the new Despicable Me ride has been in technical rehearsals trying to fine tune all the special effects. While there’s no set schedule for the rehearsals, keep an eye on the attraction line; you might be able to get a sneak peek before the opening.
You can't miss the building, though. The Despicable Me Minion Mayhem facade is easily recognizable as Gru's dark and gloomy home straight from the film and the queue area is like taking a tour of Gru's home. The story unfolds right away as you'll find humorous Minion recruitment propaganda all over the attraction from the soundstage's exteriors to inside Gru's home. Gru wants you to become a Minion. Once inside, you'll venture through various living areas, where you'll see portraits of Gru's parents and a photo of little baby Gru, as well as Gru's family tree. He also keeps his shrinking ray mounted on the wall.
After you pick up your Minion goggles (the 3d glasses,) Gru prepares you for the Minion transformation. Margo, Edith, and Agnes interrupt his induction process, and they ask to take over the experiment. This is the point where you move to the motion simulators. The ride system looks similar to the previous incarnations, Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast and The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, but the mechanics are much smoother and the high resolution 3D video is crisp and crystal clear. The movements flow well with the video, and the ride offers other effects to complete the experience.
When the ride finishes, you'll get the opportunity to join the Minion dance floor where you can boogie down with Minion characters and people dressed as Minions. There's large projections on the wall that feature dancing Minions, the Minion DJ, and a live feed of the dance floor, so you can show everyone your dance moves. Exiting the dance floor leads directly to Super Silly Stuff store, where you can buy the super fluffy unicorn Agnes wanted in the film to official Gru lab coats. All your Despicable Me merchandise needs are met.
