Maelstrom will close its doors for good on October 5th, 2014, so now is the time to head to Walt Disney World for a farewell ride on an amazing attraction that we here have many fond memories. With less than a month, I say let’s make visiting Maelstrom a priority; see its trolls, its polar bears, and everything else for one last ride through Norway. FastPass+ it, if you have to.
Walt Disney World has finally confirmed what many Disney fans have been hearing for months, that Epcot’s Maelstrom would be replaced by a new Frozen-themed attraction.
“I’m pleased to say that we’re starting construction at Walt Disney World Resort on a brand new ‘Frozen’ attraction at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot,” wrote Tom Staggs on the Disney Parks Blog. “The new attraction, which replaces Maelstrom, will take our guests to Arendelle and immerse them in many of their favorite moments and music from the film.”
Staggs also said the pavilion will include a new meet-and-greet location for Anna and Elsa. The sisters have done quite a bit of traveling since arriving at Walt Disney World last year. They were originally stationed in Epcot for several months, where lines became way too long, forcing them to move to Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom to accommodate the crowds.
Maelstrom opened in July 1988, a month after the Norway Pavilion’s official debut. Its last day of operation will be Oct. 5, 2014. The attraction currently features a boat tour through Norway. Guests will be able to see all things Norway including scenes of Vikings, trolls and oil rigs. Midway through the ride, the ride vehicle goes backwards down a hill and peeks out through a hole in the exterior of the building.
Disney has not given any details about the new ride but they are excited about “Frozen” being incorporated to the Norway Pavilion.
"We think these 'Frozen' elements are great compliments to the Norway pavilion, which showcases the country and region that inspired the film," Staggs said. The new “Frozen” attraction is expected to be completed by early 2016. During the construction the Norway pavilion will remain open.
“Frozen” is taking over other Disney parks this fall including Magic Kingdom, where the characters will have a larger presence than they already do.
"Queen Elsa will use her powers to transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace every night starting in early November," Staggs said. Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf will appear in the park's “Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.”
Meanwhile, the “Frozen” singalong that debuted at Hollywood Studios will be extended through the holiday season.
Stay tuned for more details about the new “Frozen” – themed attraction replacing Maelstrom. In the meantime, make sure you get in one last ride before October 5 with discounted Walt Disney World tickets right here on Best of Orlando.
