The Great LEGO Race will open in LEGOLAND Florida in 2018

It’s about to get a lot more thrilling at LEGOLAND Florida. The Orlando theme park announced Tuesday that they will be incorporating virtual reality technology into the park’s “Project X” roller coaster to create a new attraction called The Great LEGO Race.

The high-octane experience that puts kids in the driver’s seat was created by Merlin Magic Making. The company’s global creative and delivery division asks “Are you brave enough to face, race and beat the best of the best in all of LEGO world?”

Riders will go up against a lineup of popular LEGO mini-figure mystery characters including Trendsetter, Pharaoh, Surfer Girl, Wizard and Pirate Captain. Wearing VR headsets, guests will experience the world of LEGOs in an entirely new way.

It all begins in the coaster’s queue, which will resemble a pre-race space with pit crews for each of the five LEGO racers. There are also interactive, hands-on elements to keep kids entertained while they wait.

LEGOLAND Florida will add virtual reality with The Great LEGO Race

During the ride, Bluetooth technology will sync with the roller coaster’s twists, turns, drops and climbs to create a thrilling adventure just like during a kids imaginary play time.

“The Great LEGO Race was inspired by the way kids play with LEGO toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative director for Merlin Magic Making. “It’s a unique LEGO adventure that lets kids enter an epic imaginary world made entirely from LEGO bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun LEGO characters, all mixed up together.”

The exciting thing about The Great LEGO Race is that you can do it with or without the VR headset. If you just can’t decide, a pre-show video will demonstrate the experience with side-by-side views of the coaster track and what it will look like with a virtual reality environment. The ride is intended for children 6 years of age and up. Children under 6 that meet the ride’s minimum height requirement may ride without the VR headset.

The Great LEGO Race is expected to open sometime in 2018. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime you can check out the rest of LEGOLAND Florida’s thrills with discounted tickets here on Best of Orlando.
