Virtual reality is now a reality at LEGOLAND Florida Resort. The Orlando theme park is off to the races with its first virtual reality ride – The Great LEGO Race.
Previously known as Project X, the roller coaster drops riders into a wacky and colorful race. “The Great Lego Race was inspired by the way kids play with Lego toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative director for Merlin Magic Making in a statement. “It’s a unique Lego adventure that lets kids enter an epic, imaginary would made entirely from Lego bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun Lego characters all mixed up together.”
“What we did is painstakingly map out every inch of this roller coaster,” Keith Carr of Legoland said in an interview. “What you feel and what you see are actually in sync with each other. That’s what makes the virtual reality work. What we wanted to do was take and enhance the drops and take and enhance the turns, and that’s what the VR allows us to do.”
The VR headsets are adorned with googly LEGO minifigure eyes and are completely optional. You can ride in “reality mode” if you would like.
The ride begins when guests step through the attraction’s new entry portal, featuring giant versions of mini figure racers and their LEGO race cars. The queue has graphics that represent each of the five racing teams, along with themed elements and video an intro video showcasing a wizard, surfer, pirate, pharaoh and other racers you’ll be racing against.
Once you strap into your four-person go-kart, you will twist and turn through a selection of detailed LEGO landscapes. Along the way racers will smash through walls and take unexpected detours. The action takes place all around you in a full 360-degree view, so you won’t miss a thing.
The Great LEGO Race is the first VR coaster designed for kids. It is also the first time the LEGO brand and its mini figures have been integrated with this technology in a theme park attraction.
