Halloween Horror Nights 28, the nation’s premiere annual Halloween event at Universal Studios will once again put you in the middle of your worst nightmare. This year promises to be the most terrifying yet, bringing some of the scariest names in horror to life in a whopping ten haunted houses (the most in the parks’ history) and five scare zones. Guests who dare enter will experience iconic horror films, terrifying TV shows and original series from the twisted minds of Universal creative. While the theme hasn’t yet been announced, we do know that this year will revolve around 1980’s horror.
Here are the original horror stories brought to life at this year’s horror fest:
The Harvest - In the Harvest, guests make their way into a sinister barn, which is filled with props and images for each of the 10 haunted houses, and is populated with “foul and decrepit creatures” that are looking to reap a harvest of flesh and screams.
Vamp 85: New Year’s Eve - A sequel to Halloween Horror Night 2016’s Vamp ’55 Scare Zone, Vamp 85: New Year’s Eve continues the nostalgic scares but this time vampires invade on New Year’s Eve. As the ball drops, you’ll dodge blood-sucking monsters, all outfitted in their best ’80’s outfits of course.
Twisted Tradition - Things are certainly twisted in this scare zone. The jack-o-lantern infused area isn’t what it appears. The closer you look at those pumpkins that more that becomes clear. The pumpkins are fused together with human flesh, and the worst part is they are decomposing!
Revenge of Chucky- Everyone is familiar with the iconic 80’s red-haired Chucky movies, and this year, he is coming back to exact revenge in his scare zone. Taking place in a toy fair, these toys don’t just want to play, they want to carve you up. With Chucky in command, be prepared for unwelcome toy revenge from the red-haired killer himself.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space- These clowns are not what they seem to be, so watch out because that tempting smell of cotton candy is far from sweet and tasty. Those cotton candy cocoons are spun with human victims inside, grotesquely consumed by the Killer Klowns. Escape or feel the unsugary wrath of their cotton candy rayguns and fall prey to their sweet hunger.
Stranger Things - Netflix’s Stranger Things will take guests step-by-step through all eight episodes of Season 1 - starting with Will’s abduction in Kirkwood and going all the way through to the Demogorgon showdown at Hawkins Middle School. Guests will encounter everything from flashing Christmas lights to the Hawkins National Laboratory and the Upside Down.
Trick ‘r Treat - The 2009 film Trick ‘r Treat is making an encore appearance at this year’s event, this time as a haunted house instead of a scare zone like it was last year. Guests will walk through each of the movie’s various storylines, including walking through Mr. Kreeg’s “infamous” house to watching the costumed girls turn into werewolves.
Dead Exposure: Patient Zero - In 2008, Halloween Horror Nights introduced a haunted maze that took guess inside total darkness for one of the greatest haunts in all of the event’s history. This year, the house returns with even more frights and blackness than before. The house is set in Paris in 1982 when suddenly the grid goes out and everything turns black. What remains is sure to haunt your dreams.
Slaughter Sinema - The 80’s theme continues with Slaughter Sinema. Guests will enter an old drive-in that is hosting a marathon of B-rate horror films. But suddenly you’ll find yourself becoming a part of the horror, running from alien cannibals, swamp yetis, werewolf bikers and more.
Carnival Graveyard: Rust in Pieces - The third original haunted house to join the line-up, Carnival Games: Rust in Pieces takes place in a decaying carnival with gruesome carnies who torture those who enter their park. Using carnival rides they have turned into torture devices, the carnies splash the walls of their park with blood from their unknowing victims.
Seeds of Extinction- The sixth house to be announced, Seeds of Extinction takes place moments after a meteor hits earth and the human race is wiped out. Plants and vines take over, but they are more harmful than not. Strangling vines and man-eating plants take over the earth and you have one choice going through, survive.
Poltergeist- Take a tour through the Freeling’s family home in this seventh haunted house to be announced. Come face-to-face with iconic characters from this chilling horror movie including the pool of dead bodies and the infamous hands in the television set.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers- Michael Myers is back and he’s out for revenge. In the eighth haunted house to be announced, go into the realm of Haddonfield where Myers has escaped from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium to seek revenge on his niece Jamie, and terrorizes the town along the way. Will you get out alive??
The Horrors of Blumhouse- Blumhouse productions have returned for another year at Halloween Horror Nights and this year, The Horrors of Blumhouse are bringing two of the scariest thrillers to life, Happy Death Day, and The First Purge. Relive the murder of the college student over and over again and experience how the Purge started, and try not to be purged yourself in this ninth haunted house.
Scary Tales: Deadly Ever After- In the tenth and final house to be announced for Halloween Horror Nights, walk into a fairytale that has done a complete 180. These fairytales are nothing like ever imaged, because the Wicked Witch of the West has taken over the land and created cruel alternative endings to the fairytales we know and love. Guests can expect to come across twisted stories of Humpty Dumpty, Rapunzel and The Wizard of Oz.
Academy of Villains - The professional dance group, Academy of Villains will deliver a high-energy and mind-bending performance at this year’s event. Stay tuned for more details.
